In the past week, we’ve seen two full rounds of Suncorp Super Netball played. We will have to get used to this condensed nature of the competition as the same thing is happening in the coming week. Round two last weekend began with an upset win by Thunderbirds over Giants and featured the emergence of Adelaide goal attack Georgie Horjus. Then came a Vixens 28 goal demolition on Firebirds. The Sunshine Coast’s four goal win over Magpies was noteworthy for the fact that Lightning won the match without scoring a single super shot. Then came the match of the round. Fever got out of the blocks quickly and they led Swifts at half time, before the move of Sophie Garbin to goal shooter. She totally dominated the third quarter, scoring 21 goals and helping Swifts turn an eight goal defecit into an eight goal lead. The NSW side then had to hold on against a fast finishing Fever team with Helen Housby sinking the winning goal in the dying seconds.
Round three began with a sublime performance from Jo Harten at goal attack as she led the Giants to a 75-68 defeat of Fever. It was Giants’ first win of the season, and came in Caitlin Bassett’s 200th national league appearance. Magpies also notched their first win as they scrambled over the line against Firebirds. Kim Jenner and Mahalia Cassidy starred for Firebirds, but the team lacked the confidence to go on with it after taking a lead into the last quarter. The last two matches saw comprehensive victories in milestone matches, firstly to Swifts over Thunderbirds in Paige Hadley’s 100th game, then to Vixens over Lightning in Kate Moloney’s 100th game. Last year’s runners-up looked badly out of sorts against the brilliant teamwork of Vixens. Even at this early stage, Vixens and Swifts are laying down the marker as the teams to beat.
In round 9 of New Zealand’s ANZ Premiership, we found out who would be the opponent for defending champions Pulse in the grand final, set down for Invercargill on Aug 23. On Sunday we saw the big match up between Mystics and Tactix, the two teams battling it out for that second spot in the grand final. Tactix just had the upper hand for most of the game and they stretched the advantage to a seemingly safe 6 goals with just 3 minutes left. Then came an incredible finish. Mystics scored five straight goals and a very nervy Tactix just held on for the crucial win. As Mystics had already been upset by a determined Steel side two days earlier, this result gave Tactix the inside running. They then confirmed their place in the final with a convincing win over an under-strength Pulse the very next day. Pulse was without Maddy Gordon and Ameliaranne Ekenasio and it’s to be hoped they will be back for the final. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, round 10 has been called off this weekend with all games counted as draws. Hopefully, finals day can go ahead next week
