NS SCOREBOARD – Oct 3, 2020

Apologies for the delay since the last edition of the NS SCOREBOARD, but there’s been so much going on. In this edition, we look at the last three rounds of Super Netball, ahead of the finals series which starts this weekend.

Round 12 saw Fever spearhead Jhaniele Fowler break her own record for most goals in a game. She shot 69/72 (including one super shot) to contribute 70 of Fever’s 80 goals as they beat Swifts by 9.  Meanwhile, Vixens star wing attack Liz Watson was a withdrawal after injuring her ankle in round 11. This seemed to badly affect Vixens at the start of their game as Magpies shot out to an 8-0 lead. Eventually, Vixens recovered however to win 61-53, with Kate Moloney starring.

Round 13 was Indigenous Round, and unfortunately, all of the great netball was overshadowed by the fact that Firebirds’ Jemma Mi Mi, the competition’s only Indigenous player, didn’t get on court. It was a bad misstep by Firebirds in what was otherwise a great performance as they defeated Vixens 64-58, and it dominated talk all week long. Mi Mi ended up playing a big role in Firebirds’ last round win over Collingwood and she was embraced by her teammates.

Round 14 began with many opportunities. Although the finalists had been decided, their order hadn’t. As it turned out however, Swifts and Fever both squandered great chances, Swifts held a good lead against Giants, before Jo Harten went on a scoring blitz, nailing six super shots in the last quarter power play to salvage a draw. A draw that would prove very costly for Swifts. Next up was Fever, who held sway most of the game against Thunderbirds, before 18 year old Georgie Horjus stepped up and sank four super shots herself to sink Fever by just one goal. It was the only match of the regular season where a team had turned defeat into victory by use of the super shot. And again, it was very costly for Fever. With Swifts and Fever both failing to win, it meant Lightning was safe in second place. So the semi finals were set…

Major semi – Vixens v Lightning

Minor semi – Fever v Swifts
