During the past week, we clicked past the halfway mark in Suncorp Super Netball. Eight rounds were played in the month of August. Round 7 was a replay of the fixtures from round 4 and it led to some interesting results. In round 4, Lightning beat Swifts by 7 and Thunderbirds beat Vixens by 7. Ten days later in round 7, both results were exactly reversed. This time, Swifts beat Lightning by 7 and Vixens beat Thunderbirds by 7. These wins put Vixens and Swifts at the top of the ladder. Also in round 7, Giants had another great battle with Firebirds. In round 4, they couldn’t be separated, playing out a 61-61 draw. This time, it was so close to another draw, with Caitlin Bassett scoring right on full time to see Giants get up 66-65.

Round 8 was highlighted by the clash of the top two in Vixens and Swifts. This was high quality netball all the way, with Vixens just proving to be a touch better on the day. Swifts had to make do without star shooter Helen Housby for around half the game with a corked thigh, so they will think that they can definitely match it with Vixens in future games. In other games, a super shot blitz from Jo Harten saw Giants firstly get out of trouble and then run away with the match against Magpies. Then we saw a chaotic finish to the battle of the birds, with Firebirds just coming away with the win against Thunderbirds. And in the last match of round 8, newly appointed Australian coach Stacey Marinkovich looked on as her Fever team completely demolished Lightning 80-56. It was a breathtaking performance from Fever, while Lightning had a day when nothing worked and nothing went right.

Here’s something to think about. Top of the table Melbourne Vixens (who do have good long range shooters in their team) have won both of their past two matches without scoring a single super shot. In fact, they only had one attempt in each game. The tactics around using or not using the super shot have been very interesting so far in the first eight rounds. Round 9 starts today.
