Looks like normal transmission has resumed after that game…
Told me that the aussies hadn’t played well for the first three games and the ferns don’t have much depth outside of their starting seven. Aryang impressed me in that game. Not sure why she doesn’t start. Walmsley was ok, with Ekenasio there. But Ekenasio spreads the circle with her long range shooting.

There was a noticeable drop off when Nz bench players were put on. I’d like to have seen Salmon taken over and developed as GA. Don’t think Wilson or Walmsley are the answer at GA. In fact it was one of those ridiculous moves by Taurua playing a 192cm player out at GA.

It’s good that Ekenasio looks like she’s got a couple more years left in her. But could be interesting next year without Nweke there.

Wonder what excuse netball nz will come up with to allow Nweke to play the internationals next year… That game just showed me that if you are wanting to use 2025 to build combinations in the shooting circle then barring Nweke from playing is not the right way to go about it. The feeds into Nweke were especially errant last night and almost on the dangerous side firing in such wayward passes.

Looked to me like Poi has cemented her place as WA. She is less error prone than Souness.
I was disappointed in the bibs in the air/training game approach by Taurua to that game. I guess it showed where the ferns bench players are at.
It’s a shame we didn’t see more of Horjus.

        I concur with you @nanator.

Ekenasio, Nweke and Walmsley are on lock for me. It’s really up to the other young shooting options to sort their fitness out. While not in the Development Squad it will be interesting to see if Georgia Heffernan finds herself at December’s trials..

Gordon, Heffernan and Poi have cemented their roles. For Poi’s exploits at WA and her ability to slide to C, I think a WA specialist can be picked. The opportunity is there for Toeava IMO if she passes fitness testing. I think Souness needs a big ANZP to force her way back into the Ferns, but working with Gordon, Walmsley and Metuarau is a good start. COB looked frazzled last night.

I was thinking Karaka was gone but her 15 minute cameo reminded me her elevation is unlike anyone else in the Ferns and I think her role will evolve more to a GD/GK slide in the future. I would retain Burger, Jury, Karaka and Mason moving forward and bring Burley into the squad over Mikaere.

I get what Taurua was doing last night but there were too many changes. Walmsley should’ve got a half at GS – for herself and the feeders to settle in. IMO she was better at GA than Wilson who seemed to forget she had Nweke in the back.. Gordon can never be off the court, and Heffernan and Burger are best one position back from where they finished.

Disappointed with the final margin, but the fact I blinked and our deficit was back to 6 midway through the last quarter without doing anything special our side was pleasing to me. Would have been interesting if our starting 7 played the full second half.

Just imagine if Ekenasio had got hurt in game 1 1st minute. It would have been 4-0 to Diamonds.
Noel’s now has about 18 months to the Com Games to get a back up GA, that is international quality, no offence to Mai and Amelia but no thank you.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing regarding the SF very tactical and structured changes. Overall the SF spine is growing stronger. Notably Taurua mentioning longer camps.

Fast 5 should hopefully expose some new GA talent.

Congratulations to the Diamonds securing the last game.

Locked in spine for me would be Nweke, Ekenasio, Gordon, Heffernan, Burger, Jury. Would love to see what Tui brings in combination with Ekenasio. Salmon needs another season before she debuts I think, she showed her inexperience a bit this season which is expected of course. Walmsley still a bit fragile, needs to rip in the ball harder, Bruce was all over those 50/50 balls. Ferns can afford a specialist WA (Toeava) as all three other middies can play C. Would be good to have her on the bench to change things up. Souness and MRB are too frantic and too many turnovers.

I didn’t watch the four previous Ferns games live and they won – so I thought I would give this a miss as a good luck charm. I’m not going to watch it now (haha) but a little disappointed with the scoreline. Australia always have had this performance in them, it just came two games too late.

My dream Ferns team would swap O’Brien for Toeava, and Wilson for Metuarau. So much creativity and versatility in that team, especially at WA (four players could play there!)

Nweke will definitely be at the Swifts for longer than year.

I think the ferns did alright given that there was at least one position that was different to the previous starting 7. And it showed these combinations need more training, because the number of mistakes made were painful. So many fumbles, mistimed drives, moving in to the same space etc. the feeds were on to Grace but middies much more hesitant this game. Diamonds back to their usual steady play.

Wilson shot pretty well but her feeding game needs to lift. It’s actually her movement and crowding of the shooter’s space that’s a bigger issue. Walmsley too passive and too weak. She needs more time in the gym. Needs way more training on her drives and offloads. Heffernan in C was shaky to start the third quarter but once she got the attacking rhythm, some of her long feeds to Grace were excellent. COB was too frantic, reminded me of Souness actually. Gordon must not leave the court. Karaka quite good considering she only got a quarter. Mason still a bit green but so much potential there. I agree about the spine being Nweke, Eke, Gordon, Heffernan, Burger and Jackson. Either slot in Poi at WA, or slide everyone up to slot in either Mason or Karaka in GD, like how they finished in the last quarter.

For the diamonds, Aryang the stand out. She needs to stay in GD. Bruce getting her confidence back, but i think that was because she started on Walmsley and got the better of her. May have been different if Nweke had started. Moloney was very steady, she’s in better form than Hadley at the moment. Austin much better, i think she’s been practicing shooting after taking a step back, similar to Fretwell. My diamonds spine would be Austin(GA), Watson(WA), Price(WD), Aryang (GD), Bruce(GK). Garbin or Koenan (who is in bad form right now, but her movement can beat most GKs) in GS, Dwyer in for Austin if she’s having an off day, Moloney or Hadley in C, and Klau for Bruce if needed. Weston’s not the same player since her injuries, Garrett has yet to prove herself but appears to have potential, and Ellis may be if she can clean up her game. Still think Ervin can be the next Susan Fuhrmann… Remember her against van Dyk?
