Dwyer should have started.
I’m thinking Australia have an issue at WD. Could be worth moving Price back there and having Moloney at C or bring Watson on there.
But as has been mentioned, Aryang doing well.
I wonder if Aus will make any changes going into the Australian legs. Give Ellis or Ervin a go?
in reply to: 2026 COMMONWEALTH GAMES #1380562Good point @mcleod.
I am sure the possible controversy over excluding an event which holds its own as an exclusively women’s event would have also been discussed, particularly because it’s a team event that features some countries not well known for their presence in sport.
Netball is guaranteed to fill seats as well, especially at the pointy end.
in reply to: 2024 CONSTELLATION CUP – AUS v NZ (October) #1380545I get the sense that whatever has happened between Wallam and Ethel Diamonds has been agreed upon.
Perhaps she has decided to have a break from all things diamonds and due to the type of “hate” she receives on social media, they haven’t made an announcement and also support her not doing any diamonds posts/stories for the time being.
Something is definitely going on but I feel there is a mutual understanding between all parties, it just leaves us in the dark is all.
in reply to: 2024 CONSTELLATION CUP – AUS v NZ (October) #1380523I am actually quite keen to see what Horjus could do at both WA and GA. She is a smart player and quite powerful but unassuming.
GA wise, let’s remember she has trained against Wilson, Sterling and Garrett for a few seasons. She has some tricks up her sleeve.
in reply to: 2024 CONSTELLATION CUP – AUS v NZ (October) #1380514Not surprised NZ won that so convincingly.
Australia looked so flat, almost like they expected things to go their way. I don’t think they were complacent, but just not hungry enough.
I’m assuming Weston was on managed minutes which is why she didn’t start? And SM would have wanted Bruce to play out the game.
Thought taking Garbin off was the wrong choice when it was Austin that was struggling. Glad to see Dwyer come on and do a good job, although gave away a couple of soft turnovers like breaking. Koenen wasn’t too bad, but she just hasn’t had enough court time recently.
NZ just weren’t making any errors, and even when the pass wasn’t quite right, Nweke was quite athletic to save them on the baseline.
Going to be an interesting series!
The fitness standard issue is so baffling.
Selection seems to be based on that alone. Almost every eligible player in the ANZP has the opportunity to trial.
I just assume the Diamonds meet certain standards, as in it is part of their selection. If they don’t meet them, they receive feedback and coaching and support to bring them up to that standard. However, within the Diamonds it appears there are various factors that determine their fitness, including their natural flair and talent, their decision making at crucial points in the game, game smarts and ability to stick to the game plan/processes when certain things happen etc
Sports science and psychology tells us these days that it is not just flair and talent or fitness that leads to success. It’s having the right balance of both across the team and how individuals can come together, each contributing something unique to the team.
That balance is seriously missing with the Ferns.
I’d hope they could do better than calling it an illness, if it was pregnancy.
Personal reasons would be more appropriate.
Agree.
And I think Koenen deserved to play with Hadley and/or JLP on the court.
It wasn’t just that Koenen was the change made in the second test, it wasn’t their first choice midcourt either.
I wonder if Wallam is having some quiet time. I don’t blame her.
I suppose Horjus is good cover in goals and at WA and that doesn’t leave much room for Mundy at this stage.
Price, Hadley and Moloney have C covered.
Ervin’s chance will come. There must be something they still want her to work on before she steps on the big stage.
Yep, and now Price will be a target for players coming on to immediately get under her skin because she will react.
I would actually take JLP off for at least a quarter, more to make her learn from this than being worried she will be sent off.
Terrible call. Shaw clearly delaying play and intentional contact.
But, Price is the experienced player and needs to play to the umpire, not the debutant.
I guess we aren’t privy to the training environment.
SM just may not think they are quite ready above the players that have been selected in the 12. It would be a tough balance to leave players out to expose others, and look what happened with JLP left out.
To then leave out Dwyer to include Horjus would probably be quite detrimental to Dwyer. The benefit of being exposed to the team environment alone would be enormous for Ervin and Horjus.
Parmenter probably doing a bit of her own soul searching right now.
SM was somewhat out coached today but I think she would have taken a lot away from that loss.
Hadley and Price clearly missed, Parmenter not tight enough. It would be good to see what Ervin can do against a player like Tchine before the NZ series.
I totally agree Re: Klau at Swifts. This isn’t the first time she has performed well with Aryang, they have a good understanding.
The issue at Swifts is that other teams and coaches have worked the Turner/Klau combo out. Klau was left to cover too much at the back, hence the penalties. Turner was out of play a lot as well, requiring Klau to do extra work.
Klau would be a good pick up for Firebirds, Giants, Mavs and possibly Vixens/Fever in 2026.
Also agree that Austin was the unsung hero last night!
