in reply to: Make the time outs count! #1307995
I don’t have a problem with the timeouts. They’re quite short. Each team gets 2 per half, maximum of 4 per game. In the past, players faked injuries to get a timeout, so we aren’t going any “worse” than that.
However I think that the rolling sub is the new timeout. Often it’s only one player that needs a rest and some instructions. Pull someone off (eg Proud or Hadley), let them watch a few things, tell them new instructions, and put them back on and they suddenly fire. You don’t need timeouts for the whole team too often.
in reply to: 2020 SSN ROUND 2 – SWIFTS v FEVER #1307909I know! it was a VERY interesting game but I was busy writing a report. I wonder whether Fowler hadn’t settled for 1 point on her last shot (levelling the scores 72-all) and gone for 2, could they have won? I wonder if Housby and Garbin hadn’t both missed, wasting 20 seconds, could Fever have equalised? Very interesting ending involving both tactics and fate.
I don’t think that we can separate the individual contribution of Fowler v Garbin. Garbin had one dominant quarter but Fowler had three! And Fowler had an Australian Diamond GK on her, and she showed the guts under huge pressure to hit 3/4 super shots right at the end.
Lewis and Moore – both excellent games. Lewis actually got more possession than Moore! It’s just that she looked a bit amateur in the third quarter and didn’t adjust to Garbin.
Key stat of note – lost possession. For me, that’s the turnovers + intercepted passes thrown. So, Collyer was the big problem here, she gave it up 11 times. Also, quarter 3 for Swifts, they lost it only 2 times, where each other quarter was more like 8-9 times. And therein is the story of the match.
in reply to: 2020 SSN ROUND 2 – SWIFTS v FEVER #1307889Who was MVP? I’d give it to Fowler personally. I know Garbin made a big difference but Fowler was dominant all match.
in reply to: 2 POINT SHOT! #1307660With regards Harten “not wanting to be out there”, although this is not on topic of this thread, their team had a heinous number of turnovers and the connection from Harten to Basset was at times embarrassing. Harten doesn’t like the super shot but the whole game was a bit super shot from the Giants that could’ve won it.
Don’t get me wrong – Swifts also committed way too many errors. Perhaps Swifts were lucky or perhaps they just had that tiny bit more composure and don’t have the need to be quite so fancy.

in reply to: 2 POINT SHOT! #1307659Dear everyone
It’s very clear to me why the super shot zone is larger and closer in than in Fast 5. In Fast 5 you can shoot a 3 pointer from outside the circle. In SSNL you can’t let your foot touch outside the circle if you want to shoot. That’s an infringement resulting in a free pass.
So it’s too tricky to land both feet in the two point zone and not outside the circle. They made the super shot zone a bit wider. Simple.

SWIFTS by 5in reply to: 2020 SSN ROUND 1 – VIXENS v MAGPIES #1307277These are some very different starting lineups! But never fear, every team so far has made regular changes across the whole court in the first three matches.
Notice that the three umpires are all from Melbourne. Also, there is a very limited amount of us (not Victorians) getting to interview the players on camera or audio.
in reply to: 2020 SSN ROUND 1 – GIANTS v SWIFTS #1307205Pretty tiny crowd, looks like maybe 60-70, which means that the players, coaches, staff, umpires, officials, broadcast and media will actually constitute more people.
Yesterday it definitely was common to use a tactical timeout just a few seconds before the super shot period so I expect that today, too.
in reply to: 2020 SSN ROUND 1 – GIANTS v SWIFTS #1307204Plenty of long range shooters here today! I think Giants will take change to a Harten/Austin/O’Brien/Price front line for that part of the game, but I’ll update you if we see Bassett nailing a heap of long shots during warmup. And I think this will be O’Brien’s debut for Giants, although she used to play for Swifts of course.
Haythornthwaite and Garbin are both in the Swifts 12. Both have been known to get long shots in but Haythornthwaite has a pretty flat shot. I’d still think Wallace and Housby are a good option for super shots.
in reply to: NS DREAM TEAM 30 #1288680Here is my lineup, see below the reserves and costs. I like using this salary cap idea, because it has resulted in me thinking carefully and using players from across the globe. I’ve only been into netball for 21 years so I never really would’ve included McKinnis or Jenckee or Edge or similar era players. I love the combination here in GA and WA, they would make the attack end sizzle. Also with this C and WD it would make it oh so easy for the defenders to grab every possession.
GS Potgieter – I think equal as a target to van Dyk and cheaper (at this point)
GA Colling – the ultimate playmaker and very accurate, better than Holzhausen
WA O’Donnell – I spent most on her, because she is so incisive and lightning fast
C Guthrie – so tenacious, I want a defensive centre and she is safer and smarter than Langman in attack
WD – Scholz – I can’t believe she was this cheap, physical, fast, and enormous reach
GD – Pretorius – we won’t see many players with her uncanny understanding of the game
GK – Sterling – same as Pretorius, a total freakBench
Cox – X-factor, and can actually play both positions
Burger – X-factor, consummate understanding of both feeding and defence
Harrison – X-factor, plays all the D positions and is very intimidating and can use the HoistOther options
Shooter – Southby, who can play both positions and is a bit more creative and has better fitness and accuracy than Cox, but not the X-factor
Centre court – Julie Seymour or Olivia Murphy, with all their leadership and experience
Defence – Corletto, probably my favourite defender ever, the greatest athlete this game has seen, or Bruce or de Bruin who are both quite versatile but tallPotgieter, Colling, (Cox) total $8
O’Donnell, Guthrie, Scholz, (Burger) total $13
Pretorius, Sterling, (Harrison) total $9- This reply was modified 3 years, 11 months ago by Andrew Kennedy.
