Good on the two of them – both with wee ones and husbands/partners no longer in NZ. They say it takes a village to raise a child so I do hope there are plenty of residents in their respective villages :)MaryannParticipantOctober 18, 2021 at 11:27 amPost count: 473MaryannParticipantOctober 17, 2021 at 4:19 pmPost count: 473MaryannParticipantOctober 16, 2021 at 1:09 pmPost count: 473
@McLeod, absolutely agree it was because Noels was coach. Maybe the idea that if they remained under her it was going to be detrimental to their respective WC teams.MaryannParticipantOctober 16, 2021 at 4:32 amPost count: 473
I read that she turned down a second year at the Magic. I think it was in the Magic’s farewell statement to Caitlin.
There has to be more to it than what we are reading i.e. Was she told that if she was part of the Diamonds squad for CG that she needed to be residing back in Australia? Given NZ border and quarantine policy there was no chance of her popping back over to Australia for training camps prior to this coming seasons end.
I guess we’ll never know but imo it would be best for her to just quietly get on and decide what she is going to do, then announce it.MaryannParticipantOctober 13, 2021 at 10:13 amPost count: 473
Thanks for the update McLeod :) If I had input to the decisions I would recommend that those players from Northland, Auckland and Waikato remain outside these regions – getting them out for a training camp in the current situation would be a no no.
There is a Herald article which I cant post the link to today about the Cadbury series.MaryannParticipantOctober 13, 2021 at 7:37 amPost count: 473
@Kerryn – good points. You’d have to agree though that using a GA as third feeder makes it an awful lot harder for the selectors to see a GA potential. Metuarau really showed her stuff when Fisher was concussed as until then she had also been mostly off loading to Fisher.
TP, Hume and Toeava were the fails of the squad IMO.
Kersten, so good at WD but not C, needs to be able to show quality play in a second position to really be of value in the squad.
Wilson – if Noels goes with Nweke, Wilson will need to mix GS/GA in the ANZ season.
Burger – love her at GD but she needs a GK behind her who is mobile and will jump. She was exhausted last night, a lot of running for three full games and then having to do all the jumping in the circle as well.MaryannParticipantOctober 13, 2021 at 5:15 amPost count: 473
to above comments re Rore and Johnson –
Rore has indicated a desire to return to International
Johnson is a hard one – she actually lives north of Auckland, in Maungawhai (Northland). Travel time on a good day (never a good day in Auckland) is 1hr50mins from Mangawhai to Manukau (where Stars train). Shaun (playing for Warriors) will be based in Australia for the season which was not in their plans when they returned to NZ (thanks Covid). So with a 13 month old atm and even with family support how well, if at all, will this work?
I’d like to think that Karaka (who is also facing a partner overseas till about June and has a young child) will make herself a contender and also that MSB will come into the season firing after two seasons out with injury).MaryannParticipantOctober 12, 2021 at 5:46 pmPost count: 473
cookiesnjam – who do you suggest the circle defenders should have been changed for? They only have three in the squad due to injury and Aucklands covid status. Tong is GK, pretty tiny for the men and is still healing from a rib fracture.
Jury needs to learn to jump! Kopua, De Bruin and Harrison could/can jump so she should be able to.MaryannParticipantOctober 12, 2021 at 4:04 pmPost count: 473
Heffernan at WD – hopefully its not because Kersten was hurt when she took that large fall last evening.MaryannParticipantOctober 12, 2021 at 2:48 pmPost count: 473MaryannParticipantOctober 11, 2021 at 6:49 pmPost count: 473
Don’t forget NZ have Phoenix Karaka and Michaela Sokolich Beatson coming back as well.MaryannParticipantOctober 11, 2021 at 1:23 pmPost count: 473
@McLeod, I believe Winders injury was a last second injury so no time to do anything – I assume you mean why wasn’t another player brought it?
Hume definitely deserves another chance tonight based on last nights ability to feed the ball and to prove that she can shoot at international level. TP’s had years now to produce the goods.MaryannParticipantOctober 10, 2021 at 6:04 pmPost count: 473
Noels made it clear to Maia from the beginning that she would want her to play at GA as well as GS and to Maia’s credit she has worked and worked on it. Maia and Grace proved a very effective combination. For those of you who haven’t been shoulder to shoulder with Grace she is one seriously big unit. She is also incredibly determined and passionate about cementing herself as the SF no.1 shooter – she will do what is needed, and more, to get there.
I’m not sure Bailey will make herself available for Ferns again, just a gut feeling.
Gordon did well out there tonight, she is nuggety and it showed.
